Akewalk 2 serie Nudes
Artist
Avery Danziger
Exhibition
In his Harlem Valley Project, Avery Danziger captures the paradoxical beauty of a place in ruin—where man-made order slowly gives way to organic decay. Far from romanticizing abandonment, Danziger’s photographs are precise visual studies that extract abstract and formal elegance from environments steeped in disorder. Donning a HazMat suit to access the hazardous interiors of the long-abandoned Harlem Valley psychiatric complex, the artist composes what he calls “portraits”—carefully edited images that reveal what is present yet often hidden. Here, emotional history is secondary to the quiet tension between entropy and structure, presence and erasure.

Nudes
The Nudes series brings together photographs taken by Avery Danziger from 1978 to the present day. The subjects are not professional models but friends and collaborators who shared with the artist a desire to explore light, form, and the presence of the human body.
Although many of these images might appear digitally manipulated or created through multiple exposures, Danziger works with a purely analog method based on a single long exposure. During this process, the artist uses a flashlight to trace the body’s form in multiple positions within the same frame.
The result is an ethereal and luminous rendering in which the body becomes a trace of light and movement — suspended between presence and absence. Nudes is a meditation on trust, intimacy, and the painterly gesture that light can draw upon the skin.

Avery Danziger — Artist’s Statement
These photographs were taken from 1978 until the present day. These are not models, they are friends who asked that I photograph them, or were enlisted to work with me to create one of these series.
Although many of these images appear to be manipulated in Photoshop or multiple exposures, they are actually single exposures with the subjects stroked with a flashlight to capture their form in multiple locations in the frame during a single time exposure.
