WORK

The work unfolds as a fabric deeply linked to the interconnection between thought, experience and human emotion. The work draws from collective memory and the inexorable passage of time, taking the body – and, in a particularly eloquent way, the skin – as a symbolic territory where identities, experiences, and traces are inscribed. It aims to capture the ephemeral: the persistence of a touch, the scar as emotional architecture, the invisible imprint that time engraves on bodies and objects.

Plastic language emerges from a constant dialogue between memory and matter. The starting point is often a persistent memory, an obstinate sensation or an image sedimented over time. Sometimes it is the texture of the skin itself, the vestige of a caress or the silent mark that time deposits on a loved object. Memory —both individual and collective— becomes, in the process, an essential raw material.

In the creative gesture, touch acquires a fundamental role. Painting allows layers to accumulate and sediment slowly, making visible a temporal rhythm that often goes unnoticed. The process is, at the same time, an exercise in erosion and reconstruction. Like the skin keeps scars, its practice is characterized by the persistence of erasing, scraping and rewriting. It also takes value the reality that inhabits imperfection, in what remains after wear.

Through these superimposed layers, it is necessary to aspire to provoke in the viewer an exercise of introspection: a shared recognition of the fragility inherent in the human experience. It aims for the observer to connect with his own traces, with his own scars, and discover that beauty can arise from both imperfection and the ability to rebuild after the passage of time.

Like the traces that life leaves on the skin, each piece aspires to contain its own history.

Artist biography

Josep M. Codina

The artist Josep M. Codina participates Galeria Espai Cavallers

Josep M. Codina made his first solo exhibition in Mataró in 1985. Trained in the academic field, first at the Pau Gargallo School of Applied Arts in Badalona and then at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Barcelona, he began his artistic career under the mastery of other local artists. However, he quickly detached himself from these initial influences to delve into the creation of his own pictorial language, characterized by an exploration towards abstraction.

Codina’s work is defined by a constant search for the balance between form and color, with an abstraction that transcends simple representation to become a space for dialogue with the viewer. His compositions seek expressive force, exploring texture and matter to generate suggestive atmospheres. The use of light and the pictorial gesture endows his creations with great intensity, making each piece become a territory open to multiple interpretations.

Throughout his career, he has combined pictorial work with design and teaching, and has received several awards and recognitions. His work has been exhibited in numerous exhibitions, both in private galleries and in public institutions, and is part of private and public collections such as the Carmen and Lluís Bassat Foundation, the Vila Casas Foundation, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Tarragona or the Witness Collection of the La Caixa Foundation, among others.
