Description

Shigeyoshi Koyama was born in Osaka (Japan) in 1940. Self-taught, at the age of 22 he moved to Tokyo, where he began his artistic career.

He travelled to Paris in 1970 and then to Cadaqués, where he remained until the end of 1982. His first exhibition was in Tokyo.

In all Koyama's work, through his personal conception of pictorial space, the oriental tradition is evident. His themes are presented in a resolution of planes, an aspect which gives him an absolutely personal way of capturing reality, not as the eye perceives it, but how he perceives it; he makes his personal reinterpretation of the themes, which in his canvases or papers become sensitive and poetic for the viewer.

In his work, we find the white luminosity of the houses often confronted with the dark mountains which seem to rise menacingly in the rear. On the beach, the solitary fisherman faces the fragility of a fishing rod in the immensity of the sea. Between the mountains and the sea, we find beautiful olive groves.

Light is a very important part of his work. We find it in all his works, but above all in the Mediterranean landscapes. Koyama creates atmospheres, worlds and timeless universes, which he places in Cadaqués, but also in Barcelona, Paris, La Mancha, Albarracín, Sicily…

He works with oil and watercolor techniques. His chromatic range moves between blues and gray, without forgetting greens and reds, whites and oranges, which inspire him according to each moment, the time of day or the season of the year. He also uses these colors to create the composition of each work.

Koyama is that real and imaginary, Eastern and Western, figurative and abstract artist. Some critics have defined his works as Koyama style, which is a refined and consistent way of perceiving the world.
